Brrrrr… Do you feel that? Winter’s definitely coming!

Whether the weather has taken its annual cold turn near you or not, you’re undoubtedly planning for the season ahead: stocking up on soup and stew recipes, maybe changing your bedding – and definitely shopping for new winter clothes!

Here are our favorite winter trends this year, recommended girlfriend to girlfriend:

1. Classic Trench Coats

It may not really count as a “trend,” since it remains stylish year after year – but this cold-weather staple is definitely worth investing in! Spring for a sleek, knee-length belted trench (we recommend black, unless you already have one of those – in which case, try a neutral beige or a fun bright color this season!) and you’ll have the perfect overcoat to throw over your work clothes, party dress, casual weekend wear – whatever! This one from London Fog is lovely.

2. Boyfriend Cardigans

Perhaps the most figure-flattering cardigan style around, the shrunken boyfriend silhouette is ideal for wintertime layering. Look for one with a button-front V-neck that sits at the hit for optimal comfort, style and versatility. Shop around for a variety of colors and patterns (stripes, chunky ribbing, colorful  floral and ikat patterns, polka dots, dip-dyed gradients and argyle are all on-trend this season) and stock up! We’re loving the pastel color blocks of this sweater, available at

3. Big Scarves

Year after year, the scarf remains the ultimate winter accessory; it can stand alone as a statement piece, or add a cozy layer to long necklaces. This time around, the scarf is bigger than ever before – which makes it great for keeping warm, and also for balancing outfit proportions. You can stock up on neutral colors, but our favorite way to wear this season’s giant scarf is by choosing one in a bright hue or ethnic-inspired print that adds a wild pop of color to an otherwise tame palate. We adore the pink elephants on the Bryant Park Scarf by Stella & Dot.

4. Faux Fur Collars

Elegantly taking the place of a chunky knit scarf, the faux fur collar on a contemporary coat adds a touch of glamour to your holiday party outfit. It’s a great way to experiment with faux fur without having to commit to over-the-top, head-to-toe fluff. The plush trim of this coat from ASOS beautifully frames the face and draws the eye upward, while keeping the wearer chic and warm.

5. Cigarette-Leg Jeans

Halfway between the jegging and the straight-leg, the cigarette-leg cut is especially flattering for all body types. The sleek style works equally well with dressy pumps and chunky ankle boots, and it can also be easily worn tucked into riding or snow boots. The ‘Stilt’ Jeans by AG in Smitten are faded to the perfect indigo and expertly cut to be form-fitting but not clingy – and they really do go with anything! Get them at Nordstrom.

6. Wide Belts

You say you’ve got your outfit together, but just need the finishing touch? Well, here it is. A wide statement belt will help cinch everything together, ensuring that your feminine shape remains visible beneath all those thick winter layers. Transform any sweater dress or tunic into the perfect hourglass shape with an attention-getting statement piece like this one from ROMWE. The delicate flower pattern is stunning, and the price is stunningly affordable.
